KFMS 6th-8th grade students have the opportunity to select an Opps/Electives class each quarter. This quarter, they can choose from a variety of exciting options such as 3D Printing, Weights, Art Time, Baseball and Softball Skills, Algebra, or exploring a Foreign Language. These engaging 30-minute classes provide a fun and valuable addition to their busy schedules

Fifth-grade students had the opportunity to share their writing with their sixth-grade buddies, allowing the older students to offer guidance and suggestions for improvement. Activities like this not only motivate students to put forth their best effort but also provide a meaningful, authentic audience beyond just their teacher.

Each year, the KFMS ASB uses the proceeds from the annual fall fundraiser to purchase shirts for students and staff. We encourage everyone to wear their shirts on Blue and Gold Friday to show school spirit. This tradition helps promote our school’s goal of fostering a strong sense of belonging for all students. Thank you to everyone who supports our fundraiser and contributes to the success of our school!

Students are encouraged to embody the qualities of the KFMS goal every day. Staff recognize these positive behaviors by awarding Focused Recognition cards when they witness acts of kindness, responsibility, teamwork, and service. This month, we celebrated these students by drawing names for a fun and energetic dodge ball game with the staff—an event that always proves to be a highlight for both students and staff alike!

KFMS had an impressive turnout this year, with 29 boys joining the 7th and 8th grade basketball teams. Under the guidance of coaches Michael Potestio and Cylie Richards, the team had a fantastic season, showcasing dedication and teamwork on the court.

Stand-up desks have become a popular trend at KFMS, with teachers and support staff embracing them to enhance classroom dynamics. These desks allow staff to move freely around the room and hallways, staying closer to students and activities. This increased mobility fosters better engagement, promotes interaction, and creates a more flexible learning environment.

Mr. Kroiss and his KFMS students have focused on three core principles in Health Education this year: integrity, best effort, and sportsmanship. Students use a rubric to assess themselves and set goals for improvement. They also reflect on the KFMS values of kindness, responsibility, and teamwork while learning the new game of Hand Ball!

Mrs. Benner applied for and received a grant from the Washington State School Retirees Association to purchase a set of class books. She used the funds to buy The Giver for an upcoming unit of study. KFMS is fortunate to have teachers like Mrs. Benner who seek out additional funding to support their classrooms and students. Congratulations, Mrs. Benner!

KFMS transformed Martin Luther King Jr. Day into a day of service. Students were encouraged to complete a chore and request food in exchange for their work. The food drive became a friendly competition between advisories, with the winner determined by the total weight of donations. Mrs. Walker’s class took the top spot, bringing in 423 pounds of food and earning donuts as their prize. In total, KFMS donated 734 pounds of food to the KF Community Chest.

KFMS recently held its monthly assembly, celebrating the wide range of extracurricular activities that students are involved in. Greg Mace, Assistant Principal at KFHS, recently visited KFMS to share the meaningful history behind the bell in front of the high school and the special significance of when it is rung. He spoke passionately about his cousin, Doug Lickfold, and the lasting impact Doug made at KFHS over 50 years ago. As Greg shared his story, a few staff members in the audience were moved to tears, reflecting on a time long past. Thank you, Mr. Mace, for helping us remember the deep significance of this tradition and for honoring the legacy that has shaped our school for generations.

6th graders worked on creating New Year’s resolutions last week. Using a One Word Resolution , students chose their word to remind them of their goal. After designing their words on paper they transferred them to shrinky-dink sheets and they were baked. The shrunken words will be attached to backpacks, keychains or crock shoes as fobs to remind them of their goal for the year!
