For more than 15 years, Kettle Falls Middle School has celebrated the growth and accomplishments of its 8th grade students through Passages, an annual presentation that serves as a bridge between middle school and high school. Each spring, students present to a panel of three community members, sharing a Google Slides presentation that highlights their learning journey, personal growth, and future goals. Students reflect on their strengths and areas for growth while providing artifacts and evidence related to the three pillars of Passages: Mastery of Knowledge and Skills, High Quality Work, and Character. They also discuss their transition to Kettle Falls High School and explore potential career paths they may pursue after graduation.
Following the presentation, panelists conduct an interview with each student, asking questions similar to those that might be asked during a job interview. Using a detailed rubric, panelists evaluate each student's presentation, communication skills, preparation, and reflection before determining whether the student has earned a passing score. Students then wait outside the room while the panel deliberates before receiving feedback and learning the outcome of their presentation. Students who do not pass on their first attempt are given the opportunity to revise and present again to earn a passing score and qualify for the traditional 8th grade trip to Silverwood.
Passages continues to be one of the most meaningful days of the school year for the KFMS staff. It provides an opportunity to hear students speak honestly about their successes, challenges, goals, and dreams for the future. The thoughtful reflections and maturity demonstrated by our students remind us why this tradition remains such an important part of the middle school experience. We are proud to share that every 8th grade student successfully passed their Passages presentation this year, a testament to their hard work, preparation, and growth throughout their time at KFMS.
