Math

At Kettle Falls Middle School, all 5th–8th grade students participate in the end-of-year Smarter Balanced Assessment in math. We view this as an opportunity to celebrate the growth our students have made throughout the year and to reflect on their progress as learners. This important milestone highlights the hard work, perseverance, and learning that takes place in our classrooms every day.

Students in grades 5 through 8 engage in over an hour of math instruction each day under the leadership of our classroom teachers, Kaylie Maresh and Brady Hansen, along with the support of multiple paraprofessionals who work with students daily. A few years ago, we adopted the Reveal Math curriculum, which is designed to promote active engagement, curiosity, and problem-solving. This approach encourages students to think critically and work through productive struggle, helping them develop a strong mathematical mindset rather than relying solely on memorization .

To support all learners, our math program blends technology with hands-on classroom experiences. Students spend approximately 15–20 minutes each day using ALEKS, an online program that adapts to each student’s individual skill level. This targeted practice is paired with classroom-based inquiry, where teachers guide students through collaborative learning experiences. Through group discussions and shared problem-solving, students construct their understanding together, strengthening both their skills and confidence in math.

We also provide additional supports and opportunities to meet students where they are. Our 5th grade students participate in a daily “Walk to Math” period  for at least one quarter focused on building foundational skills that prepare them for grade-level concepts. At the other end of the spectrum, 8th grade students have the opportunity to earn high school Algebra credit based on their readiness and continued growth. At KFMS, our goal is to ensure every student is supported, challenged, and prepared for future success in mathematics.
