At Kettle Falls Middle School, our Science program is built to spark curiosity and develop true scientific thinking in every student. All 5th through 8th grade students have a dedicated science period, ensuring consistent opportunities to explore, investigate, and learn. Our teachers, Amy Brown and Jessie Bolt, lead this work using the OpenSciEd curriculum—an engaging, hands-on, inquiry-based approach that puts students at the center of their learning.
Through OpenSciEd, students don’t just learn about science—they do science. Lessons are designed for students to ask questions, develop and test ideas, make claims, gather evidence, and use reasoning to explain their thinking. This approach aligns directly with the Next Generation Science Standards and helps students build critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving skills that extend far beyond the classroom. Walk into any science class at KFMS and you’ll see students actively engaged in labs, discussions, and real-world problem solving.
This spring, our 5th and 8th grade students will showcase their learning on the WCAS (Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science). We are incredibly proud of the work our students have put in all year and are confident that their hands-on, inquiry-based experiences will help them shine. Our students are not just preparing for a test—they are becoming scientists, and we can’t wait to see all they accomplish! 🔬✨
