Long Walk to Water

All KFMS students are assigned to a two-period block Humanities class. This class is a combination of language arts skills and engaging social studies content. The students have one hour of All Block where the work on vocabulary, reading skills, and independent reading.  The students each have an iReady Personalized Planning app on their iPad that differentiates language arts skills to their individualized level. Students take an iReady diagnostic assessment at least three times a year to check on progress. Students make goals at the beginning of the year and at the semester to monitor their growth. The other hour of the block is spent on our adopted ELA curriculum from EL Learning. This curriculum is divided into modules that are aligned to the state standards. The modules are built around an engaging topic. Some of the topics include the American Revolution, Sudan Refugees, the Indian Boarding Schools, Greek Mythology, Japanese Internment Camps, and Mexican Folklore. Students report that Japanese Internment was one of their favorites because there were camps in our state. Another favorite was reading the Long Walk to Water during the Sudan Refugee study because it was based on true stories. When asked if they could add a topic, students reported learning about the Wild West.
