Kids in canoe

At Kettle Falls Elementary School, each grade level engages in several Expeditions throughout the school year. These are based in English Language Arts, Social Studies, the Arts and other content areas focused on the Expedition Topic. These are in-depth studies over time where Experts are incorporated into building knowledge around the topic and students become the experts through hands-on experience. Recently our 3rd Grade classes were engaged in an Expedition based on the Fur Trade and local connections to Kettle Falls and the settlement of our area. In partnership with the Kettle Falls Historical Center our students were able to examine different furs as well as tools that were used during the fur trade settlement. Along with reading and writing projects based on the fur trade, students were able to create their own Native American Ledger Art depicting either a Native American or a Voyager from the Fur Trade. Our 3rd graders have a much deeper understanding of the Fur Trade and the impact and influences connected to our local area.
