The Rod Humble award is an award given to a high-school aged student with a visual impairment being served by the Washington State School for the Blind. It is awarded to a student that has shown exceptional growth in some area.
This year the award is being given to Nicole Lawrence. Nicole is a junior at Kettle Falls High School. She has an eye condition which makes it extremely challenging to do many school-related tasks that most of us are able to do easily with little effort, things such as reading, writing, and using a computer. Even though Nicole struggles with her eye condition every day, she still maintains a positive attitude and works hard to keep up and complete the same work as her classmates. These last couple years in particular, she has made huge progress in her ability to use assistive technology help her complete tasks independently. She has also dramatically improved her reading ability. She is very persistent in learning new skills and we are all very proud of the wonderful progress she’s made.
