The 3rdgrade had a visit from former Kettle Falls student, Kash Sly. After Kash graduated from Kettle Falls in 2015, he joined the Air Force where he became an electrician. He has been called upon for projects around the world because of his specialized training.
For the 3rdgrade, it was an enriching opportunity to have Kash as an expert. In Expedition they were studying schools around the world and the challenges students face as they access education and books. Through his duty in the Air Force, Kash had just returned from Latvia, where he helped remodel a school. The Latvian Elementary School was unsafe. The wiring was exposed and there was no heat. The school walls were stuffed with grass to protect the students from the harsh, winter climate. Kash worked to improve these conditions. He came prepared with a slide show and video to teach the students about his experience.
One lesson Kash wanted the 3rdgrade students to learn was, they should feel lucky to have such safe, comfortable schools. Not all kids have this. He said he appreciates this more now as an adult. He also told the students they should definitely listen to their parents and teachers. Kash spent 6 months in Latvia and next he will be traveling to Israel, where he will help on another school project.
