The first grade crew at Kettle Falls Elementary are putting their engineering skills to work, just like “the three little pigs.” As part of their expedition on fairy tales, students read and compared many versions of the traditional story, The Three Little Pigs. The students were asked to pick their favorite from the eight books read and write an opinion piece explaining why they chose the book they did.
After completing the opinion writing piece, the first graders turned into architects and builders! They started building houses just like the three pigs did in the original story. First came straw construction. There were multiple ideas about how straw can be combined and bundled to build a solid structure. After two days of exploring with straw they walked to check out some local construction before building stick structures. Next they will build with bricks, mixing mortar, exploring with bricks, and then build a final house for their pig families. Each of these building projects gives students the opportunity to work in teams to solve real world problems.
